Cairo Steps presents a distinctive musical experience at JAZZING AQABA, blending Egyptian and Eastern musical traditions with jazz, classical music, and contemporary sounds.

Founded by oud player and composer Basem Darwisch, the ensemble is known for blending lively rhythms, innovative musical improvisations, and soothing melodies, creating music that brings together diverse cultures and musical styles.

In 2002, Egyptian composer and musician Basem Darwisch, based in Germany, founded Cairo Steps alongside renowned pianist and composer Matthias Frey. Since then, the ensemble has toured the world, continuously presenting its unique musical style, which blends traditional Egyptian and Eastern music with modern jazz improvisation, classical music, and contemporary sounds.

Cairo Steps blends diverse musical styles from around the world, combining Egyptian and Eastern musical traditions with modern jazz improvisation, classical music, and electronic sounds, alternating with strongly harmonized rhythms. The result is a distinctive and unique musical style that brings together a wide range of cultures. Their concerts feature a selection of original compositions, alongside classical and Arabic works arranged in a jazz style.

The ensemble draws inspiration from musical modes rooted in diverse cultural traditions, alongside European musical influences. Their performances move between powerful ensemble rhythms, technically accomplished solos, and calm, meditative soundscapes, creating a distinctive and captivating blend of musical cultures.

Cairo Steps has performed in Egypt, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, and Germany, collaborating with musicians and artists from around the world. The ensemble has also participated in international festivals and live television programs.

In 2018, Cairo Steps, in collaboration with Quadro Nuevo, received the German Jazz Gold Award for their album Flying Carpet.
