Rhythm Race Revolution is an 8-week course with Aditi Jaganathan that uses music and its attendant cultural texts, as a site of deep study, through which ideas of race, gender, colonialism, healing and transformative justice are collectively explored. It is a radical learning space tracing the sonic(s) of resistance.

Session 5: Deep listening to the possibilities of Azania

In this session we will be examining the revolutionary potential of the southern african movement(s) for liberation. Through the prism of sound and resistance music we will deeply listening to how Southern African artists used their craft to reimagine a free Azania.

“[music] isn’t just notes. Every note has a social meaning. I’m singing my mother’s knowledge of the plants that grew around her…playing should be informed by history. We should not be afraid to say that the revolution is not over, and refining our music is part of that revolution.” - Zim Ngqawana in Gamedze, 2018
