BESTAND

Bestand is back at Pavillon 1 at Otto Wagner Areal (OWA) with the third edition of 𝕚𝕟𝕗𝕣𝕒:

𝕚𝕟𝕗𝕣𝕒: 𝕦𝕡/𝕠𝕣 draws upon the first two 𝕚𝕟𝕗𝕣𝕒: events from last year and extends the process towards an exploration of what drives us beyond foundational artistic, social, and cultural 𝕚𝕟𝕗𝕣𝕒:structures. Guided by liberation and justice, 𝕚𝕟𝕗𝕣𝕒: 𝕦𝕡/𝕠𝕣 invites you to join a flow of common sounds, words and motions. From the bottom up (– or where else?). From deep down to the surface. From silence to expression to action. 𝕚𝕟𝕗𝕣𝕒: 𝕦𝕡/𝕠𝕣 carries the potential for movement, experimentation, change and dedication.

The event begins with a site-specific workshop on the poetics of memory and expression in the field of the Steinhofgründe (all mediums are welcome), followed by our music programme. The programme presents live music performances and DJ sets ranging from community-centred and freestyle-inspired formats to more experimental, organic grooves and bouncy basslines. A blend of beats, rhythms, sounds, movements and speech transcending binary limitations.

The event is accompanied by delicious food prepared by compot. Angie and Malik play with seasonal, fermented, and foraged ingredients to create dishes inspired by their personal food memories.

About the Location:

The Volkskundemuseum (VKM) is currently based in a building that is being used temporarily, slightly outside the city centre, in the Otto Wagner Areal (OWA) on Baumgartnerhöhe. The OWA has a long and dark history, especially during World War II, when it served as a place for the "elimination" of people deemed "inferior" by the Austrian/German Nazi regime. People with disabilities or mental health conditions, members of marginalised groups and non-conformists were not welcome in the "nationalsozialistische Volks- und Leistungsgemeinschaft". They were persecuted, imprisoned, and subjected to extermination. The OWA area is therefore an official place of remembrance, as well as a socio-political space that has to take responsibility for opposing the destruction of lives. Aware of this dark history, our aim is to reflect on both the past and present through our artistic work, engaging with it in a conscious and meaningful way.
