Palestinale

Doc-Feature Film: A Fidai Film

Directed by Kamal Aljafari

2024 | 78 min | Arabic, Hebrew and English | English subtitles

Palestinian-German-Qatari-Brasilian-French production

Investigating the looting of Palestinian films which took place in Beirut in 1982, the film uses this event as a premise in order to make visible materials hidden in Israeli archives, and proposes a counter-narrative of a continuous history of appropriation.

Palestinian filmmaker and artist Kamal Aljafari is known for his distinctive approach to cinema. He studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne and has held teaching positions at The New School in New York and the Deutsche Film-und Fernsehakademie in Berlin. He was awarded a Radcliffe Fellowship at Harvard University and most recently a fellowship at The Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination in Paris (2024–2025). As from September 2025, he is a resident at Académie des beaux-arts x Cité internationale des arts in Paris. The Palestinale (Palestinian Film Days Munich) is an initiative of activists and filmmakers from and in solidarity with Palestine. Our project was created to bring attention to the struggle of the Palestinian people, a struggle that has been ongoing for 77 years. We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination, liberation, and the full realization of human rights. Through cinema, we aim to create a necessary space for Palestinian voices to be heard in the cinemas of Munich. Our objective is to showcase films that narrate and document resistance, identity, and hope, while also confronting the realities of displacement, occupation and genocide experienced by the Palestinian people.
