LAMMAT IFTAR
“Lammat” is an Arabic word meaning an intimate gathering — a coming together rooted in closeness and shared presence. “Iftar” is the moment at sunset during Ramadan when the daily fast is broken. LAMMAT IFTAR invites participants to experience this cultural ritual as a shared, immersive event.
To experience the full meaning of the gathering, participants are encouraged to arrive fasting — refraining from food and drink from sunrise until sunset. Sharing this period of waiting and restraint allows everyone to experience the transition that gives the meal its significance: moving together from anticipation to nourishment.
The evening begins with the collective iftar meal. Sitting and eating together expresses core cultural values of hospitality, generosity, and equality. The shared table becomes a space where connection is created through simple, embodied actions.
After the meal, the gathering continues with the Hadhra. The word means “presence,” and it refers to a collective rhythmic and vocal practice rooted in Sufi cultural traditions. Through repetition, sound, and synchronized movement, participants experience unity through shared rhythm and breath.
The evening concludes with a Wasleh Musiqia — a traditional Arabic musical suite that unfolds as one continuous flow. Rather than separate songs, it is an evolving musical journey that gradually builds emotional intensity and shared listening.
LAMMAT IFTAR brings together food, rhythm, and music as cultural practices that create community. It offers a direct experience of how gathering, shared time, and embodied ritual shape belonging and collective presence.
