Fiction, director: Ameer Fakher Eldin, Germany/Palestine/Italy/Canada/Saudi Arabia/Qatar/Jordan, 124 min, EN/DE, with En st.
A melancholic ode on the longing for a homecoming that remains out of reach. Munir (George Khabbaz), a middle-aged Arab man living in Hamburg, suffers from unexplained breathing difficulties. Afflicted by pain and anguish, he yearns for salvation and seeks refuge on an isolated island in the North Sea. There, the raging storm holds him captive. Munir’s solitude begins to fracture when he encounters Valeska (the legendary Hanna Schygulla), the owner of the guest house where he is staying, and her enigmatic son Karl (Tom Wlaschiha, Game of Thrones). Still, the weight of exile and the ache for a lost home linger, distorting his sense of time and place, casting a shadow over his tormented soul. A beautifully woven, poetic account, its dreamlike language and lyrically composed frames evoke the cinematic mastery of Andrei Tarkovsky and Theo Angelopoulos. The second feature film by Syrian filmmaker Ameer Fakher Eldin premiered in the main competition of the 2025 Berlin Film Festival.
Followed by a film talk with Ameer Fakher Eldin.
