Feathers! Produced by Shaden Dance Company. The new dance show (Feathers!) by Shaden Abu Elasal embodies a state of love between two people under one roof. One of them does not realise that he is enslaving himself in service of the other until entities come to life; these beings push him to challenge the single roof, walls, doors and windows, and eventually to learn to fly. We are then confronted with a question that we rarely dare to think about: Is the house a place of safety or a dungeon of deprivation? Is our overriding concept of home an unshakable a priori? In the present moment in which our consciousness is being formed anew, we discover that we do not know to what extent we are free. We do not know whether we can reach a stage in which we will be liberated from the clutches of that oppressive authority. We do not know, but we ask, taking into account that the majority of people care about the truth only when it supports their needs and is consistent with their ideas and convictions, but they deny the truth when it conflicts with their preconceived biases, opinions, and interests, or perhaps they distort the truth from time to time. It's a confusion. What do we say about what is happening to us now? Shouldn't we point it out so that (feathers!) performance does not seem like we are in a state of luxury? Feathers flew and are flying. A feathered bird flies. And a feathered bird does not fly. Feathers are flying. Feathers in the colours of hoopoes and peacocks bury the sky, fragile and unable to land, iron and steel that escapes the wings and flies but does not fly, blown by the wind so that it does not fly. A metal bird without feathers flies, swoops down, and flies again. Are feathers still a metaphor for flying? Maybe it's the feet that fly? Maybe we are all flying and the ground has become distant?! Are we maybe flying into the bowels of Earth? And what of feathers? Compost for the earth, a meeting with the heavens, fuel for the fire, or do you see it more as pillow stuffing? A snooze?... Wide-awakeness?... Feathers!... Feathers!... Feathers!
