“This work is a true embodiment of liberation. My practice puts the power back into your hands and supports you in holding it.” - Nana Sharifa Ageno Bryan
Sounding Towards: Trumpets of Collective Liberation is a two-part, place-based activation of Black indigenous liberatory pedagogy and spiritual technology.
Flowing through co-created installation, collective sound and movement, writing exercises, and group reflection, informed by Afrodiasporic and Caribbean healing traditions, this restorative practice will provide participants with new tools and understanding that will be carried into their personal and community work.
Participants will partake in collective cleansing and community ancestor altar building rituals that disempower colonial narratives of belonging, while uplifting ancestral memory, legacy, and wisdom.
Day One: Here, We Belong
Commencing with a brief artist talk, Nana Sharifa “Ageno” Bryan will explore the importance of energetic cleansings throughout indigenous traditions and how specific rituals are used to empower individuals, families, and communities.
Participants will then be guided into a ceremonial purification of the space in preparation for Day Two’s community altar installation.
Please wear white or light-colored clothing.
What to Expect:
Movement of the body
Activation of voice
Handling of herbs, incense, resins
Sound-making
Creative writing/journaling
Collective reflection
*Participants are strongly encouraged to attend both events to maximize their experience, but it is not required.
