UNUSUAL SCREENING is a participatory performance, shared dinner and film screening exploring memory, identity, displacement, power, and the memory carried by the body.
The evening begins around a shared table with food and wine. What first appears to be an act of hospitality gradually becomes part of the performance, shifting the audience from spectators into participants.
Through conversation, movement, interaction and moments of uncertainty, the work asks what the body remembers, what happens to identity under systems of power, and how experiences of borders, detention and displacement remain with us.
The live performance is followed by the screening of Living, Dying in a Box, a short film by Khaled Karri, and an open discussion with the audience.
This is not a conventional film screening. The audience is part of the experience.
About Khaled Karri
Khaled Karri is a Syrian multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, cultural mediator and cook based in Rome. His practice moves between performance, cinema, food and participatory experiences, exploring memory, migration, identity, displacement, power and the relationship between the body and lived experience.
He is the founder of MAKAN APS, an art-and-food collective that uses shared meals as spaces for encounter, storytelling and artistic experimentation. His work brings together his experience in cultural mediation and humanitarian contexts with his academic background in Political Science and Communication.
Karri is the director of the short film Living, Dying in a Box, which forms part of the ongoing UNUSUAL SCREENING project — an evolving performance and screening format in which the audience is not simply watching the work, but entering it.
20:30–22:00 — Shared Dinner & Conversation
The evening begins around a shared table with food and wine. Dinner is the first movement of the work: a space for encounter, hospitality and conversation.
Over ninety minutes, the table gradually opens questions around memory, identity, belonging, displacement, power and what the body continues to carry from past experiences.
22:00 — UNUSUAL SCREENING: Live Participatory Performance
The atmosphere begins to shift. The boundaries between guest, spectator and participant become less certain as the audience enters a physical and psychological exploration of identity, authority, memory and the body.
22:30 — Film Screening

Following the live experience, the film creates another layer through which ideas of confinement, migration, memory, displacement and human dignity can be encountered.
After the screening — Open Conversation
The evening closes with a collective conversation rather than a traditional Q&A.
The audience is invited to reflect on what they experienced, remembered and felt — and on how our understanding of an idea can change when it is encountered not only intellectually, but physically.
The timing is intentionally flexible. UNUSUAL SCREENING is shaped by the people present in the room, and each edition develops differently.
