Mosaic Rooms

A workshop which facilitates Bint Mbareh and Yasamin's learning through compulsive repetition, therefore the practise of listening to distilled and small changes in the space being sounded, in the room being made and the traces left behind by sounds. The workshops pays special attention to percussion as a way of tallying and divvying up time based on consensus and negotiation rather than according to the needs of organised labour.

This event is part of Bint Mbareh's residency in sounding towards - - that will unfold as a series of events: a non-musicians' choir, secret jams, workshops, silent reading hours, and listening and sharing sessions. Her takeover explores how people can learn together outside the reach of failed or deteriorated institutions, tracing where learning happens spontaneously, not in systematic ways.

Bios

Bint Mbareh is a sound researcher with a focus on water in Palestine. Her interest in the physical parallel between the water wave and the sound wave leads her into questions of border dissolutions (between bodies, between states, between tenses), and into the possibility of being enveloped by the voice, by sounding communally similarly to being enveloped by a water body. She challenges settler colonial epistemology by taking seriously Palestinian ways of knowing, from rain-summoning music to shrine pilgrimage as an instigator to political revolution.

yasamin ghalehnoie, ghalenoi, qalenoii, is undecided by the incongruity of vowels in translation. born in tehran and intermittently based in london, they write, walk, maldigest culture, make prints, perform and teach. they are curious about the connections between nervousness & nerve damage and the under engagement with the distressed angels of history. affected by the inadequacy of words or meaning, or both, they are obsessed with the residual mundanity of going mad.
